He's an absolutely marvellous player. The penultimate point was exquisite. He played considerably better than Nadal over both days - 20 break points! And to play like that with a crowd well in favour of Nadal as well. The improvement has been phenomenal.

Federer seems back on form, but Murray has a better head-to-head ratio and has to feel confident with his current performance. 10pm tomorrow. Come on, Murray!

God, listen to you lot!!

Tell you what, you can tell you're British let alone Murray.

Edit: by the way, I recall from some stats at another event that he's earnt over 2 million so far, so we can banish the idea that it's about money.

Hehe Dirky it's just that we are so used to failure.

His head to head against Federer is in best of 3's so I discount those other than to serve as a mild confidence boost. Federer has had an extra day's rest and looked pretty impressive against Djokovic imo.

Having said that, and as much as I still think he is a dour little nonce, Murray was utter genius against Nadal and IF he plays like that again I think he can win. I will certainly be hoping he does and watching tonight!

Anything to stop me thinking about the Football

I have a feeling Federer will out do him tonight for numerous reasons. Note though, I haven't seen any of the Open coverage, because of the fact the coverage is so shit, i.e. only on Sky. BBC cover Wimbledon, Aus AND the French, but Sky get their scumbag hands on the US so average TV viewers can't view it.

Bit of blurb:

- Murray first British man in 72 years since Fred Perry to win a grand slam if he wins

- Federer - 5 US Opens in a row if he wins

- Federer - 13 grand slams if he wins (5 US, 3 Aus, 5 Wimbledon), one behind Sampras's 14 record

- Murray will be #4 in the world either way

- Federer's 18th grand slam final

- First "Britain" in a slam final since Greg Rusedski in 1997 (US Open)

- In 1997, Rudsedski lost in four sets to the Australian, Pat Rafter

- Murray's career earnings: 3,121,251 ($)

- Federer's career earnings : 41,768,419 ($)

- Head to head: 2-1 Murray

I think the score reflects slightly badly on the way Murray played. For some of the game he was still very strong and out hit Federer from the baseline. The better player certainly won but with the correct line call at 15-40 at 2-2 in the second set the set could have gained a new perspective; the scene would have been slightly different at 4-2 to Murray. With Murray visibly in pain with his knee and Federer having an extra day's rest and practice time, it was probably one challenge too much. Murray's first serve wasn't as strong as it was previously in the tournament - and when it was good Federer was usually fantastic at returning it - and he made too many unforced errors for that level of play. Quite a bit to learn from and improve on, however, and $1M ain't bad!

Federer was awesome at times. It's good to see him back at the top of his game as there isn't a player in tennis who's more sublime to watch than this man when he's on form.

With the way Murray has played this tournament I'd be highly surprised if he wasn't challenging for future Grand Slams and fingers crossed he'll be clinching them soon. Hopefully he'll follow Djokovic's example following the latter's loss to Federer in the US Open final with a win in the Aussie Open in January!

Promising times for British men's tennis.

And by that I mean how often is he going to be able to beat 2 of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic/another young genius who always appears, which is what he will have to do to get to and win a Slam.

I like his tennis and he is number 4 in the World at a much younger age than Rusedski and Henman managed it but those two reached 1 final between them! Are Nadal/Federer really any different to the barrier that Agassi/Sampras presented to the rest of tennis for 10 years?

I wouldn't bet on it His progress is similar to Federer's early career I think. Admittedly Nadal and Djokovic weren't around then but Murray's shown he can beat all of those three on his day now.

I thought he looked a bit tired last night personally

1) He's beaten Nadal, Federer and Djokovic this year. Less could be said for many of those now below him in the rankings, some of whom have won a Grand Slam.
2) Federer was 22 (about to turn 23) when he won his first Grand Slam (Wimbledon) - Murray is 21 and has already reached the final of a Grand Slam, 'beating' Federer on this. Rusedski was 24.
3) Judging by his improvement this year, he's still learning and he's at just the right age to have plenty of scope for further improvement; when you compare his performance vs Nadal at Wimbledon with that at the US Open it's a staggering improvement in the space of two months.
4) With your record in predictions he's now almost a dead cert to clinch a Grand Slam. The Brits are losers in general Olympics prediction was a high point .

It all depends on his attitude. Reigning it in and channelling it correctly has allowed him to progress this far in such a short space of time; it wasn't long ago he'd slipped out of the top 10. If he goes back to how he was before he'll waste his talent. I suspect, however, this will open his eyes to his potential. He doesn't seem to display the characteristics of a loser from what I've seen thus far. With a stellar 2008 tour he has a promising 2009 ahead of him.

13th slam for Federer at 27

My predictions are pretty good thanks Andy Britain in general ARE fucking losers - look around you!

Besides which I am not predicting anything about Murray, I asked a question is all. To WIN a slam you are going to have to beat at least 2 of the top 3 players in the mens game - he beat 1 and lost to the other this time. I'm just saying that baring injuries it will be a hell of a job to win. Murray is a brilliant player but unfortunatly for him Nadal and Federer are both better. That was my analogy to Sampras/Agassi with Henman etc. It isn't me being down on his talent.

I got Rooney in the WC wrong I'll give you that - Mind you I said Spain would win Euro '08

Just re-read my ranting in the Olympic thread - You defended Murray in there too I notice Cycling and Rowing aside (where we put massive investment) we probably did the same as usual. That munting female swimmer was a nice surprise but the rest?

Heh, tennis is probably my favourite sport so I'm generally going to be optimistic about a Brit with potential and who is doing well! I would, however, agree and say that he's currently around Djokovic's level of ability, just with less experience. Although I do think Murray outplayed Nadal he was playing the best tennis of his life and generally Nadal and Federer are in a league of their own (though it's only really this year that Nadal has proven his dominance on a surface other than clay and dispelled the notion that Federer is in a class of his own).

Djokovic managed to clinch the Aussie Open after beating only one of the Top 2 (Federer) after Tsonga knocked out Nadal in the Semis, so it is possible to get there without beating them both, though I doubt Murray will be satisfied with that approach! I agree it will take some doing with Nadal and Federer on current form to pinch a Slam from their grasp, but I'm pleasantly optimistic .

In all honesty I have little interest in the Olympics. The badminton is good and the 100m etc are great to watch but it's all a bit too much chest beating really; the footie is rubbish and the tennis isn't given the coverage it deserves. It just made me smile that, after your rant, Britain had the best Olympics for ~100 years But yeah, those sit down sports eh.. gotta love them.

NB I'd be highly surprised if Federer doesn't exceed Sampras' 14 Slams too. I'd like him to, really, as he's a better player over all surfaces than Sampras, and this would reflect that.

Still got some way to go before getting anywhere near Graf's 22, though!

This is why I don't believe Tennis should be in the Olympics. In my opinion the Olympic title would be way down the list of "one's to win" for the tour tennis players. Behind the 4 slams and maybe even behind some Masters events.
The Olympics in my opinion should be the pinnacle tournament of your sport.
So if I was in charge expect to see Tennis, Football and non-track cycling gone just for starters

To get back on topic what a fantastic performance by Murray, he was awesome against Nadal but Federer was just too good last night.
Grand Slam title within a year and Sports Personality of the Year

Sports Personality of the Year - the miserable gimp!

Fair play Andy - I agree with you really. He certainly has the talent to win one but then I believe Henman also had the talent (Rusedski just had the serve) and he was denied by a combo of cruel luck and timing as much as a lack of killer instinct.

Agassi is/was my favourite player - not only did he win all 4 slams but he played without a power serve and relied on pure timing and accuracy. Watching him return serve was like seeing an Ace in reverse. Amazing stuff.

Murray beats Feds in the SF of the Madrid Masters. If he wins in the final he'll have won consecutive Masters competitions.
