Running linux under W7 the easy way

I don't want to dual boot, and I cba with a live CD, so is there another way of running linux?

I just realised as soon as I reached the end of the last sentence, that the answer is in a VM, but which VM and linux distro would be best for a final crack at learning a tiny bit about this cunt of an operating system?

What are you aiming to learn with Linux? Just basics or are you aiming at server stuff (which server roles too?). This'll kinda determine what linux distro to try. Although you might want to try a few out anyway..

As for what to use, anything would work. Probably the easiest thing to get running on Win7 (as you don't have HyperV built in) is probably VirtualBox.

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

VMWare Player is another option.

http://www.vmware.com/products/playe...valuation.html

You can get prebuilt VMs for these off the net, although if you are learning you might be better working from an install ISO and going through the install process?

Cheers mate. Just downloading and installing shit on linux would be a start.

I'd suggest something like Linux Mint (Ubuntu with all the media support stuff bundled in). You should just be able to point the VM at the ISO and off you go. You do have a choice of four desktop managers (Cinamon, KDE, XFCE and Mate). I'd use XFCE if you want to run on less than 2Gb ram otherwise it's basically personal preference.

https://www.linuxmint.com

If you cba with the install process you can get VM images from OS Boxes.

http://www.osboxes.org/linux-mint/

I used to run Mint on the PCs when I setup call centres. If the idiot plebs could manage it I'm sure you are going to be fine. Shout if you get lost and/or confused though. I can probably sort out whatsoever has gone wrong.

RedHat and CentOS are big in enterprises. There are lots of resources for these.

Try setting up a Minecraft server on CentOS, you learn it quicker when you have a purpose.

Gone with VirtualBox and Ubuntu for now. We'll see if it stays on my machine for longer than a day this time.

Which reminds me, there are no safety nets with a Linux system. It will dutiful do precisely what you tell it regardless of the conseqeuces. There's no Undo button or Are you sure prompts. This is a very powerful thing, but gets you into trouble if you are coming from windows.

Make sure you use the snapshot function of your VM frequently. It can be very frustrating when you break a working install, especially one you have customised, and can't get it back into a working state. With snapshots you will be able to roll back what ever you did that broke things with a single button press.

We use Centos for web hosting. However, it's got the delightful habit of not being upgradeable between releases. So I'm taking the executive decision to switch it all over to Debian.

CentOS is just Redhat really, so I'm somewhat surprised there is no upgrade path. OTOH a fresh install has always served me better when I've used Ubuntu LTS. Plus when you are using VMs for everything building a new VM alongside the old one is easy.

Heh. Maybe. This is Centos5. It's an old creaking box that has no more right to be on god's green earth than a weasel.

Yes indeed. But with (some with) databases, non default directories, a crackers httpd.conf and what have you - and a few other more serious security issues. It's not a lift and shift.

Add in I'm not *really* a sys admin any more, not been for many years, with all my webserver knowlegde out of date, it's a tedious, long drawn out process. Not my main task either, so gotta fit it in.

If you're interested in server admin / sysops etc then just install the server version of Ubuntu (or whatever) and follow some tutorials on how to set up a server etc

Command line is boss once you start to get used to it.

Pretty much what I want to get to grips with. It's years (probably before some people on here were even born) since I did any coding as a Cobol programmer on a Xenix platform, but I used to fuck around with Unix/Xenix quite a bit. Be nice to get back into it again, if only from an interested amateur point of view.
