Oh god no, Cameron was appalled at how they were punishing the richest pensioners. Don't recall much complaints from Labour about the horrific implications of means testing the top 5% or the admin cost.

So your issue with any complaint about the pledge is that an entirely different shadow cabinet didn't slate their own manifesto.

I'm a little sceptical about anyone who now describes it as beyond the pale but wasn't that bothered about it a couple of years ago.

I've always thought the older generation got too much, the triple lock pension particularly pissed me off (mainly in the wake of brexit) and the double lock the tories propose seems fair to me actually.

However canning the cap on care costs and changing the way they means test who is eligible, means they've just removed end of life care for anyone owning their own home. That is a disgraceful step too far. After brexit I suspect care costs are going to exponentially rise due to a lack of work force. It once again won't effect the very rich.

The post war generations got a crap load of free stuff paid for by their children, I find it hard to feel bad they can't pass on their arguably dubious assets onward rather than pay for themselves

This is good on social care as well:

Quote:
The fundamental thing to understand about the funding of social care is that it is an insurance problem. Individuals face a low but meaningful risk of incurring very high care costs – 10% of adults age 65 could face costs of more than £100,000. People don’t know whether it will happen to them, and lots of these care costs don’t arise until the end of life.

Ideally, you’d like to buy some insurance reasonably early on in your life that would pay out if you ended up one of the unlucky few. But insurance markets don’t exist that will let you buy social care insurance so far in advance.

A life-time cap on care costs, as proposed by the Dilnot Commission, is a solution to the insurance problem. It is effectively a form of social insurance, funded from general taxation. It may also make it easier for a private market to emerge that would offer insurance against care costs up to the cap.

By contrast, the Conservative plan makes no attempt to deal with the fundamental challenge of social care funding. That is the big problem – not how many people might win or lose.

It'd be a lot cheaper to legalise assisted suicide.

I'd much rather die than live with Alzheimer's.

My solution is to buy a lump of Morocco on the coast and build a super retirement city and social care hub staffed by the locals but under UK law. Solves housing, social care and will reduce the health costs

Getting annoyed about this. I'm not allowed to die, and you'll make me pay to stay alive. Thanks.

It's a step in the right direction. Perhaps having an ineffective opposition can be beneficial when it allows a party to implement progressive policies - the problem is the lottery effect; it would be better if these taxes were raised from capital gains reform (eg removal of primary residence exemption) and meaningful IHT but the principle underlying it - that people (being them and mostly their children as beneficiaries of their estate) should stand on their own two feet - is a fair one and one the middle classes expect the welfare scroungers to live by. I suspect an ancillary effect will be some rebalancing in the housing market as the pensioners down size to reduce the value of their assets.

It's the lack of opposition on both the left and the right that let's them go after the pensioners, who really have nowhere to go.
