Which DSLR is next?

I've been looking at a load of forums reading all sorts of rumours regarding Canon/Nikon's intentions for 2007. I know it's only rumour but I thought I'd share it so we could gossip about it.

Canon 5D successor x 2?

Nikon Full-frame

I hope both Canon and Nikon bring out superb cameras at competitive prices this year. Afterall, the competition will be of benefit to all of us as consumers.

The Nikon full-frame rumour is particularly interesting to me. I've moved more and more towards landscape and whilst the APS-C size sensor makes a good job it's no match for full-frame. As far as I'm concerned, the only advantage the 5D has over my camera is the sensor.
If Nikon produced a full-frame sensor with the usual Nikon build quality and ergonomics I would quite possibly do a wee in my pants. And, I'd save. Oh yes, I would need to.

However, if Nikon fail to bring out a ff camera this year (or at least announce one) then I will seriously look at the inevitable replacement for the 5D. A 16 megapixel 5D is nothing to be sniffed at. If only the Canon wasn't as clumsy to use.

By the way, if anyone is interested in the differences between the D200 and the 5D I found this article the other day which is pretty interesting.

Anyway, has anyone else seen/heard any rumours? What do you think of it all?

Loads of rumours: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...splay.php?f=82

Edit: Jon - there's a [relatively] reasoned discussion of the D200 & the 5D here (towards the middle and end): http://photography-on-the.net/forum/...d.php?t=255307 but it is a Canon site.

I'm going to take up your point about the Canon being clumsy to use as I find it to be the complete opposite and I have used a D200, albeit briefly. I think both cameras are robust and Canon v Nikon is only relevant if you're new to cameras, rather than just new to DSLRs. I bought Canon as I found that using a 300D was intutive after using an A70, and consequently for me the 5D is a breeze to use. The only thing I wish I could change is a dedicated mirror lock up button but it's only a quick change in the custom functions to disable it.

One other issue about changing from Nikon to Canon is the obvious cost of replacing lenses. The full frame will show up any "flaws" in cheaper lens so if you do change you're need to make some investment there. But I think you can use Nikon gear on Canons but you'd lose the AF and possibly other custom functions.

If a 5D Mark II is released and the only change is a move "up" to the IDS Mark II sensor, then personally I doubt if the cost would be warranted. The current 5D only needs a small boost to meet the major picture libraries file size requirements. I guess he extra 4Mp might be useful if cropped shots were submitted.

As for lenses, I'd love a wide prime but it'll have to be something pretty special (and not doubt expensive) to justify selling the 17-40.

I suppose it's what your used to, and I'm not trying to belittle the Canon brand, I've just read a lot of reviews that all say the Nikon has better build quality and handling. I just want the best of Nikon AND Canon (not much then!)

Like I say, the more I think about it the more sense it makes to move to full frame. I'd rather it was a Nikon because I like them, but if they don't release one I may well swap. It's not like I've got loads of expensive lenses anyway.

The thing that's got me thinking is that I've just sold my second (landscape) framed print and considering I only put 3 prints into a single gallery in Bridlington I feel it could be beneficial to take my pictures to more local galleries. The extra income would all go towards the upgrade to full frame.

On the forum I quoted, a lot of the Americans are very concerned about "build quality" and the "lack" of weather sealing on some cameras, such as the 5D. A couple of posters were extremely surprised that another Brit and I actually used our cameras on the coast when the wind was whipping up the spray. They couldn't understand why we would want to use our gear in such conditions. I think it's healthy that my lenses have a bit of grit in 'em - it's a bit like encouraging kids to eat coal - builds up the immune system.

Maybe they'll sort it in time for the next release. I'm watching with my beady eye.

Anyway, screw Nikon/Canon. Please will you buy me a Hasselblad H3D-39?

Yeah, they were both taken with the D50. I've just ordered prints of some of my more recent stuff to restock the gallery.

Leak of next wave of Canon pro cameras or just speculation? Apparently, this guy is a reliable source but make your own mind up.

If, as the rumours say, there'll be a new 5D in a EOS 1V body AND Nikon fail to announce a full frame camera to their line up I may well be tempted to switch.

Two things have put me off the 5D so far: the user interface (not very ergonomic and the mirror lock-up being hidden in the menu isn't great) and the poor build quality. The EOS 1V has similar build quality to my D200 and I could get used to the controls if it meant getting that full frame, landscape loveliness.

I saw something about this in Jessops the other week. Might be a worthy investment for me! (Long story, AL|3N might know!). Anyhow I looked on their website and they have some images of UK press ads. These ads say the armour goes for about £50, and I think the one I saw in Jessops was about £40 - £50. However on the Camera Armour website you can buy them for $49.95, which at the current rate is £25.65. So if you can find a seller in the USA and shipping isn't too expensive they you might be able to save a few quid!
Also any idea if the armour for the Canon 400D would fit the 350D? They seem to be a similar shape and size.
Edit: Ah! It does say "Canon Rebel XTI/400D" I believe the Rebel XTI is the 350D.
