omg no !!!!

This was probably the best site on net for music torrents. Only high quality stuff was allowed on there and always good speeds. Looks like I am back to missing ID3 tags and questionable quality downloads

Ironically this will lead to me buying less music

More worryingly I have actually seeded stuff on there myself.

There is no quality checks though. I find newsgroups to be generally pretty rubbish for mp3s. You get id3 tags missing, files not named correctly, transcodes, tracks skipping etc. Plus if you want to download a single/B-sides from something released 5 years ago you have no chance of finding it. I found loads of rare stuff on oink that I could never find anywhere else at all - even to buy in shops.

I could go search for some recommended artists on last.fm, then onto oink, type in the artist name, brings up embedded players from last.fm and myspace. Listen to a few tracks and if it is any good download the album. It also listed other similar artist torrents on the site which I could also check out. Download the albums, if they are any good it's off to amazon marketplace to buy them.

Sometimes they are fine on newsgroups but the quality is generally worse than a random torrent from torrentspy.

It'll probably be the sharing thing as you say, from the Police point of veiw they would have been interested in oink because of taking money from this service, but from as to the people using the service I'd expect that they will just go after the major sharers and just use threatening letters on the rest to see who will cough...what the BPI decide to press on with is anyones guess....it'll be interesting though.

I wouldnt worry T-Bag. When elite torrents shut down, they said the exact same thing: that they would investigate the users. Lets just say I had a very favourable share ratio, but Ive never heard anything about it and it was at least 2 years ago that it shut down.

Yep, I didn't donate anything.

The site was just invite only, I was invited by someone from here as it happens

The only requirement was you kept a certain ratio, which was very fair and dependent on your total downloads. You received certain privileges which further improved the site features if you donated, but only providing you also met certain ratio requirements. I think that fact shows it wasn't just a money making exercise - if he did make any money out of it though fair play to the guy.

But with newsgroups I don't uplaod anything so I don't commit a crime. I also have SSL encryption with my service and I get full download speeds all the time. There's really no comparison between newsgroups and torrents in terms of the trouble I could get in or the performance of the service.

They will still play the commercial gain angle though. As an individual I wouldn't be over worried as Minty said, there are way too many and it's barely an offense here...the major players that will get the most attention.

Copyright infringement is still not theft. Even if it's ruled to be so in the future I'd be surprised if any court ruled that paying for newsgroup access is the same as paying for all the content stored there. As the newshost does not monitor what I download and because I use encrypted SSL I think I'm safe from the feds finding out what I download.
