Red Dwarf - It's ALIVE!

http://www.denofgeek.com/television/...f_returns.html

Quote:
Red Dwarf returns!

Simon Brew

All hail Dave - the TV channel has just forked out for four special episodes of Red Dwarf...!

Back when we spoke to Danny John Jules earlier this year, it seemed that any hope of further televisual adventures of Red Dwarf was in vain. With the BBC showing little interest in the show, and given the passage of time since it last appeared, it seemed that Red Dwarf’s days were done and dusted.

But enter Dave, the cable and satellite TV channel that’s been pumping out repeats of the show to increasing audiences. It’s now commissioned four brand new half-hour specials, to mark the 21st birthday of Red Dwarf. With the cast back on board, and Doug Naylor once more in charge, it’s news that simply many didn’t see coming.

According to www.reddwarf.co.uk, the site that broke the story, two of the four specials will be brand new episodes of Red Dwarf. Another will be a “clip show with a serious difference”, and the remaining episode will be a Making Of.

All four will be shown in 2009, with the hope that if they achieve the kind of ratings Dave is after – and if they don’t, they’ll just repeat them on loop anyway – there may yet be further adventures on the horizon. Here’s hoping…

Some sort of closure on the story would be nice.

Not got a huge amount of hope for this myself, it went downhill after series 6 tbh - bringing Kochanski (and later the whole ship) back made the whole "alone in the universe" thing redundant and Chloe Annett just bugs the hell out of me, not least her saying she's meant to be from "Glarsgow" :/

Dave cuts the existing episodes too for time purposes which grates on me, it kills some jokes stone dead. Admittedly this'll be worked around for the new episodes but it's all a bit "meh".

Wispa's reincarnation is a godsend, so is Red Dwarf's. I loved all series in different ways, characters and story lines have to evolve. There's only one episode I don't like and that's Camille ;-)

i really want it to be good, but i just cant help feeling it'll be disappointing. Not gonna look at the link though in case of spoilers, I'm trying to make sure I know as little as possible about it til it airs.

When is it meant to be on anyway? I think someone told me April ages ago

The earlier episodes are well worth watching - the last couple of series were dire, though.

Yea Series 1-4, 5 at a push were great. I think most agree when they brought in the girl it was the nail in the coffin.

Agreed. IF they revert to the old style it could be excellent. I don't want to bet any money on it sadly

Eth, series 3-5 were pretty awesome in their day - the studio laughter etc sounds a bit dated now but the storylines were fantastic.

Count me in with you there Ian.

What little I saw from snippets etc it had no appeal for me, it was probably based too much on irony or something.

Still leaning that way myself. The original series' are absolutely great, the bad eps are better than most shows' good eps.

Series 1-5 are ace, series 6 is decent, series 7 is awful, series 8 is awful but with the odd decent episode.

This will be shit, they were too old for series 8.

Personally I liked them all in different ways because they advance the story. There's only one single episode I don't like and that's Camille.

I cant remember camille, but for me the only poor series was the final one. The whole appeal of Red Dwarf was Lister et all being all on their own in an unchartered part of the universe, so to rebuild Red Dwarf and all the crew was such a poor move. Still, T-Rex eating a cow curry was pretty good

Series 7 wasn't actually that bad, it just wasn't funny. It had some really good ideas and some good sci-fi type storylines but all of the jokes were awful.

Anyway i'm sad to say that I can't see this being any good... The no holds barred thing sounds dodgy ? No set or sfx ? what ? so its going to be like a stage show ?

_ is right. Camille is probably the only shit episode. (excluding series 8
