Thumbs up LAN over Power Adapters

I'm gunna go the LAN over power way for my new place, and I don't fancy speeding loads on it. My router is only capable of running 100mbps so I don't need to go as far as gigabit, but I don't want the new adapter to be a bottleneck either. So I've decided that going for the 200mbps powerline idea (as the lower one is 85mbps) which also gives me a bit of margin for upgradability when the routers catch up for my connection.

I've nailed it down to two for about the £50 mark, which I don't mind paying:

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/548886...g/Product.html

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

Has anyone else recently bought one of this type of thing or one of the above? Any thoughts/feelings before I splash the cash as it were?

Cheers dudes

Yeah I tried that - worked ok.

Such a piece of piss to setup that I thought it was well, taking the piss to be honest.

Problem was I got those white "advent" feckers that PCworld sell (actually via Ebay) - avoid em. One of my units just died - overheated. From digging around on the net seems that it was an identified problem with some of them and PC World where ditching them - hence why shit loads started to appear on ebay. I've heard the devolo ones are really good - slighty more but seems they do the job.

Interestingly they all seem to say that you can't/shoudln't plug the adaptor into a plug board (4 way type thing etc) as it won't work - didn't seem to bother mine and other people on line reported the same. Dunno really.

I configured a pair of Devolo's on a farm about 2 years ago and they worked a treat, just make sure you plug it into the right power loop if your house has more than one (The Farm had 2)

Make sure you get ones with a pass-through socket on to avoid wasting your outlets.

Good point. Ive had some success using them on powerstrips, BUT they prefer to be in main socket.

I've got six dotted around the house. Devolo Homeplug AV. They are ok with everything apart from streaming HD stuff.

you guys haven't had any problems with these with appliances being switched on/off around the house? I suppose with washing machines/hoovers etc... being energy efficient these days they are less of a concern, i just find the whole t'internet over ac still a weird concept especially with multiple network apps going on at the same time, streaming media from the nas, xbox online, pc surfing plus the kettle being used etc...

I use them a lot
great for a low profile connection but not ideal

I used the cheapy ones from PCworld...Advert...the lesser of the two speeds.
99% reliable. can stream movies across them but it takes some time to get going
browsing and gaming seems good, with no loss of latency but for my new place I will wire something in for the TV and use POL for upstairs only.

the netgear are probs better than mine and the setup was flawless and automatic.

sometimes though I turn them off and on again as intermittent problems need powerdown.
not sure why.
the faster ones are prehaps much better but i've only tried the cheap ones.
I keep them away from surge protectors too

p.s I use 3...one for the router, then one for them PC and one for the PC on the TV

I'm no electrician but this farm had two sets of power wiring installed, one set was not connected to the other so the Wireless signal would not work if both Devolo's were connected to different sets. I hope that makes sense

The power needs to be on the same "switchboard" ... I.e. from the same Power Meter on your wall. I think if you have two meters on your farm, then they need to remain on the same circuit.

Thinking of it differently, if they weren't on same metered circuit, then I could plug my devolo into my neighbours lounge and he could leach my stuff!

Aye, Bilb, that was I suspected trying to clarify - as I have many seperate circuits in my place now all protected with RCDs. This should be common in most houses though, so should be ok

All you need to do is strip the ends off a long cable, then put the bare wires into an outlet of one of the systems, and then put the other end's bare wires into an outlet on the other system. It's called "bridging", you'll find the term often used in networking.

Ive always fancied using these instead of having lan cables strewn about the house like we've got now, 2 pc's upstairs, xbox in the lads room, and ps3 downstairs.

How does it tell the difference between signals for each pc? or are they only meant to be for singular use?
Would they work for what i need them for? Hardwire the 2 pc's upstairs then lanplug the rest?

Srry for the thread hijack, just wondered

Nah ... not quite. They form a mesh network of sorts. Each adaptor is aware of the others and will simply route to the device that hosts the equipment you need.

For example in my garage I used to have three servers off a switch, with one LAN over AC adaptor, then in the office there was another network switch with PCs and laptops, in the hall at the main telecom socket was the router, in the lounge was the media center PC and the PS3 ... and in the bedroom was an Xbox.

If we wished to play a movie on the xbox in the bedroom it would connect to the LAN over AC adaptor in the bedroom, and then off to the adaptor in the garage where the servers are hosted.

The informer application shows each adaptor and it's available upstream/downstream rates.

So essentially mini mesh routers. Even cleverer than I thought. Gunna deffo order some of these later methinks. Thanks all

I believe it's advised against for compatibility reasons I think (rather like wireless-N)
Personally I'd stick with the same brand to be safe - bit of an arse should you want to expand with a more reliable adapter than current brand though I guess :/

I use this technology as well and have done for a couple of years.

I've got the Solwise 200Mbps adapters. No problems since purchase.
