New Router Suggestions
It's been a while since I bought a router. Anyone recommend one?
Ideally, integrated gigabit switch and wireless is a must. Definitely sub £150 and if it can be sub £100 even better ![]() Cheers v

I have that one. It's great - just one small caveat - the 7800N doesn't do IPv6. If you want that functionality, you will have to get the 7800NL. Just found this out myself about a week ago. If you're not bothered, then the 'standard' one is fine.

Aha, nice one. I have grabbed it, but couldn't find the release notes. I think I got it from Billion.com rather than billion.uk.com. That one didn't have the release notes in it iirc.

Bumpy time - is this still the best option to go for? Am going to be upgrading from a Netgear DG834G, which is struggling with wireless comms to my stuff these days.

Ok it seems to give a much better throughput than my Netgear managed - youngest got to watch Timmy Time on IPlayer without any stalls
![]() Only thing is when I turned it on this morning it wasn't seeing an Adsl signal, old router could. Did a factory reset and re-entered all the settings and it's fine again. So will try again later to see if power off is screwing it up....

Ah, I know where the problem might lie. The web interface is a bit counter-intuitive. You can 'apply' the settings, but you can also 'save config'. So you should always do both when making a change.

Yeah that's what it looks like Scrobbs, did the save config routine this time and a quick restart later everything still worked, so that's encouraging.
Thanks for the tip mate

Fair enough, I was always a bit concerned about how warm they get. Will give it a try and see how it goes. Am now going to try and positive rep you - hope it doesn't end up like Scrobbs!!

They get warm as they're passively cooled (no fan so nice and quiet) and rely on getting a little warm to get the air flowing AFAIK.

Seems fair enough - it certainly seems to be more stable a connection than my old Netgear - my Sure Signal box is staying online more too

As Blunteh says, if you keep turning it off, the exchange thinks there is a problem, and drops the connection speed until it thinks that it is stable.
Also, although you can save and import your config. Billion UK told me that I should do this between firmware upgrades, as some settings may have changed. Therefore I suggest having a written log of your config, so should you upgrade the firmware, you know what settings to re-apply.

Is there any sort of consensus as to what's the best wireless channel to use? Mine seems ok on the default channel 1, but what do you all use? Any little performance tweak I can get is always welcome

top top secret 37. depends on the environment area so different to each, can be effected locally by other networks amongst other things, try it and see.
there are ways to check easily what others are on and it appears virgin's 'auto' setting means a fancy way of saying channel 6. seems where i live everyone chooses 1, 6,7 or 11 a mix of human nature and virgin/bt auto settings i guess Last edited by Nomad; 12-Aug-2012 at 12:50. |

I have a little WiFI analsyer app on my phone, it shows all the channels in use by the other devices around me so i can manually choose the best one for my router, amazing how many people use 1 or 13.

Any recommendation for a pure wireless router? This Virgin hub is a piece of overheating shit.
