Bike recommendation

In the market for a new bike, i was massively into mountain biking about 10 years ago and i'm really out of the loop now - used to have a Kona and loved it to bits but it was stolen a couple of years ago and i've missed it ever since.

I'm looking for a hybrid hardtail, £500-600 budget. I don't really know what makes are decent nowadays so can anyone point me in the right direction?

BTW there's an evans cycles near me so i'd pref to get it from there

Cheers

I love the Cannondale hybrids. Particularly the CX3.

i cant fault this one

http://www.bikes2udirect.com/B2496.html?id=PiuJ97pc

Quad QHD-4 dual piston hydraulic disc brakes/160mm rotors
Carbon fibre 12K weave forks
Ritchey saddle, h/bars & stem
Lightweight aluminium 6061 T4-T6 hydroformed radius frame
Truvativ 5-D chainset & Powerspline BB
Sram X9 27 speed gears
Ritchey Pro Disc OCR wheels & Maxxis Columbiere tyres

The brakes on that bad boy you'd usually find on a ~1000 model

those boardmans are awesome!

the 2010 model has a slightly better spec (x9/x0 components) but that 2011 model is fucking awesome for that price

Well after much deliberation i've decided to go for a mountain bike, and it has to be from Evans as i've got some vouchers for there, here are the options i've come up with so far:

Cannondale Trail SL 4 : £599
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/...-bike-ec031493

Specialized Rockhopper : £599
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/...-bike-ec030686

Kona Mahuna : £650
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/...-bike-ec034507

Pinnacle Jarrah Four : £650
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/...-bike-ec035897

There's quite a few more in that price range - http://www.evanscycles.com/categorie...ale=;sort=asc;

Thoughts?

I'm not up with bike specs these days.

But I don't think you can go far wrong with any of them ... although I've never heard of Pinnacle.

The 'dale and specialized look great.

From those specs, Id say the Kona is the Best SRAM X4''s along the drivetrain on a octalink bottom bracket. but the big one for me is the avid 180mm Elixer's for the brakes. very very nice that

29" wheels too on that, which i've heard it quite popular nowadays? - will they make me go faster?

im nearly 6" and i have a medium frame on my Cannondale. The frame size would be fine for you i'd have thought.
Youll also find a smaller frame has a better centre of gravity if you plan on trail riding you can manouvre it better. for quick changes of direction.

I'm fairly lucky in that I live right at the foot of the south downs. Between the south downs way, downs link, stanmer park, steyning gap, ashington forest, friston forest etc we've got literally hundreds of miles of this kind of nonsense on tap;
