Has post-focusing been invented yet? :P

Poor technique I guess is why it ended up like this....

2 preceeding shots were

and

Should I have just gone for a one-shot instead of continuous?

Any tips for avoiding this result in future?

Spot focus might have helped instead of multi or wide which you may have had it set on. Shame though cause that first one is amazing.

Could be worse the rest of the retards in the audience appear to be pointing in the completely wrong direction with their cameras

That sport mode seems to work quite well for things like this.

it just can't keep up
what camera?
one shot would not do it
would have to be continuous
and post shot focusing...read the LYTRO thread

also what lens? might have been impossible to focus in that particular range

It's a Canon 1100D with the standard 18-55 IS lens.
What do you mean by spot focus Chef? I just had it on auto
Presumably with the continuous shot mode, the focus doesn't change during shooting?

As BBW says - it's the sport mode which uses A1 Servo mode where the lens will always snap to the owl. While the shutter is half pressed (i.e. autofocus activated), the camera will attempt to keep the subject in focus, and learn the movement of the subject: http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/Consu...age=1&type=faq.

Also someone ought to Photoshop that man riding on the back of the owl.

Central focal point, AI servo (exif said 1 shot focus mode), always continuous for this kind of thing. The exif said you were using shutter priority mode which would be the other thing I'd have suggested

Suspect those who make a living out of taking shots like these like Andy Rouse will ditch 1000's of shots for every amazing one you see published. Expect to have a high ditch rate for wildlife

Right, found that setting now. So I could have used AI Servo to track until I started clenching and then started the continuous shot? Once shooting began, focus would not change?
Maybe they could have made him fly slower......

Subject, the camera should constantly adjust focus as the subject moves
