I would absolutely love it if MS drove PC gaming lock stock to a Linux base. Far less cruft involved and it would hopefully push the devs of the key variants to move from their "It works perfectly, I don't know what you mean" cloud cuckoo land towards Actually Working Perfectly and would prompt the hardware vendors to start getting proper driver releases out there.

I'm not sure what happens to DirectX etc in the ensuing carnage but I'd certainly love to get some megahurts back on my rig.

The reality of course is that we sit on W7 for five more years.

And actually neither piece really gets to the end of what Gabe's problem is. The store element is obviously key if MS are looking to lockdown what android calls sideloading etc. moreover even the latter betas are absolutely shocking performance at the moment. I presume much of this is poor driver quality from AMD in my case but there must be a further performance hit from the virtualised desktop.

Further - game devs now have to retrofit existing titles for metro view and build something useful into new games in that respect to remain visible - perhaps even whilst being pressured to drop from steam and go MS exclusive. There may also be content/app signing overheads which MS traditionally make people pay for. The whole thing just massacres the profit gap compared to the leap from XP to W7.

I imagine his main beef is that if all software has to be bought through Windows (giving MS 30%) that the Steam cash cow will need new pastures.*

The terrible steam cash cow that gives game developers such a high volume of direct sales that they can make tidy profits at 25% RRP or less for up to a year after release.

Well its generally follows Microsofts pattern when releasing new versions of Windows for the home user.

Windows 3.1 - Good
Windows 95 - Bad
Windows 98 - Good
Windows ME - Very bad
Windows XP - Excellent
Windows Vista - Awful
Windows 7 - Superb
Windows 8 - Being written off already by many people in the know as being one of the worst things Microsoft has ever done.

I've been using it for quite some time now and, even though I poo-pood it like many others when I first saw it, it's really not that different from Windows 7, it boots VERY quickly and seems very stable but it is obviously a tablet OS no matter what Microdaft says.

Sun had the same pattern with Slowaris. Worth an upgrade every other version.

Roll on windows 9 with a refined metro interface and some kind of performance.

I'm admittedly not clued up on Windows 8 at all , but how can they think an OS based / aimed at touchscreen hardware ie at best a tiny tiny tiny percentage of pc's is a good thing? Surely the amount of folk who would want it will be miniscule ?

Or is it simply tailored that way but is expected to work on a "normal" pc as well?

You do actually get used to the start page quite quickly and if you need to find an app you didn't pin it's using the "just type and up it pops" method that Ubuntu seems to favour now. I think all the OSs are going to go down the same route and eventually your phone, tablet and computer will all use the same OS which will just tailor itself for the platform automatically.

I really wasn't happy with Windows 8. Sure, you can find programs quickly if you pin them, but everything else is a chore and clearly in favour of finger swipes.

There are some great features and tweaks in Windows 8, but not enough for me to forgive the poor user experience.

Pretty much my feelings on it too. Too much faffing about in it. Also didn't like the whole tying everything together. Not sure why as I like everything syncing with Google. I guess it's just Microsoft's way is usually a bit shit.

As above I would love for Linux to benefit from this. Hell an Android/chrome OS linux flavour type thing would be nice.

I don't see win 8 doing it but win 9 if it's crap could. Add to that steam making a Linux client and hopefully bringing more mainstream access to games this seems to be the best chance for Linux to actually break out/through/in.

fuck fat gabe newell and fuck valve, they have havent made a good game since Halflife and never made a good multi player game ( they bought portal and left for dead wholesale they didnt code a line), windows 8 isnt even a PC operating system its for tablets/surafaces and touch screen devices not gaming rigs, everyone knows MS makes a crazy OS after a stable solid one.

Dan that is 100% bollocks. They bought narbalular drop and it's developers which I can tell you was quite a way from the Portal that landed on the shelf. L4D was designed by Turtle Rock on an engine that Valve wrote. TF2 remains one of the most popular multiplayer FPS's to the point that some kid in Kansas is making 90k a year designing hats for it. Portal 2 MP is frigging awesome, dota 2 will be huge regardless of your feelings about it and Gabe Newell is a commercial genius.

the other thing that got me about win 8 was having to use a live.co.uk or hotmail.co.uk name. My hotmail is .com and it wouldn't let me use it. It just seems so much more clunky that the implementation from google. Gmail.com. Log in. BAM. Done. No having to make a new account oh and it has to have an 8 character alpha numeric with a capital.

Maybe I'm just bitching.

Actually on win8 you can opt to use local only logon. IT's just a bit hidden.

Portal 2 MP is frigging awesome, dota 2 will be huge regardless of your feelings about it and Gabe Newell is a commercial genius.
Sorry Matt tf2 has always been and is still fucking terrible as a sequal to TFC, you just agreed they bought portal and l4d the sequals dont count they were made by the companies assimilated, dota 2 is fucking aweful its sucess or failure is irrelevent a small inde company made a game based from the same thing about 4 years earlier and much much better, thats pretty embarrasing. As for gabe being a comercial genius Id agree steam is a the biggest intrusive DRM vehicle the world has ever seen ad yet people happily suck his cock for providing it.
