Android eating my Orange
I've got an LG540 which is now on Orange PAYG. Basically, when I was made redundant, my boss ported the number from Vodafone to Orange and gave me the phone in case he ever needs to contact me. I have turned sync off for all applications, but in the space of 5 days the balance has dropped from £ 5 to £ 0.76
Any idea what the fuck might be going on ? There's no provision for data on the particular tariff btw, it's calls only.

I gave my mum an orange San Fran and as she's on a non-data PAYG tarriff I also turned everything off and we've not noticed anything like errant balance dropping.
As well as turning off all the google account sync stuff I'm sure I turned off all cell data too, essentially turning it into a dumb phone.

The one thing I hadn't disabled was "Mobile Network". I've killed it now, so we'll see how it goes.

on android you can turn off all data and also "background data use"
which would be a bitch on PAYG! did know you were made redundant mate! hope there is something else lined up already for you

Got a few interviews lined up. Not particularly worried tbh, I can afford not to work for another 5 months.

Check the market settings, perhaps it's got something installed set to automatically update.
Another option if she's using the smartphone side of things would be switch the plan to Dolphin, and get 100MB and 400 texts free every month for a tenner, then buy 100 minutes any time any network for £7.50 out of the tenner credit. On Canary, you only get 100 off-peak minutes and 100 texts, and you get charged for calling landlines no matter the time. It's worth checking what package the phone is on, perhaps it's something to do with that. Almost forgot, if you log in at orange.co.uk, you can get your account history with a breakdown of what has been costing what at the current credit & Extras tab at the top, then recent usage from the drop-down menu. The boss has changed to Dolphin and I've installed a data monitor to try & find out what's using the data. I've set it to sync my 2 gmail accounts again, so we'll see how much it uses.
What did you mean about buying 100 minutes out of the credit btw ?

battery use by process in settings might shed some light also. but there are some specific data use apps in the market if you want to drill down moving forwards.

Cheers Matt. I'm currently having a search around to see if I can find Android 2.3.x for the LG GT540, as mine's still on 2.1 and most of the decent apps require 2.2+

Ah, makes sense now. Cheers pal. It's my phone btw, not Mrs Kahuna's. I think you got that from Groovy and his mums phone.
