Curiosity touches down

Well... I'll be... the crazy sky crane idea actually worked. Curiosity - the new rover that weighs a tonne - has managed to successfully land on Mars.

There's a couple of images kicking around, but it's out of sight of any satellites at the moment so they're going to have to wait for a bit for it to get the the rest. Damn impressive that it actually worked though.

Fantastic achievement IMO, I really was sceptical about the suspended crane on rockets lowing the rover to the surface part. Hats off to the engineers and scientists. Reading some of the comments on BBC are cringe worthy though. People saying the money spent on the rover could have fixed the middle east or fed Africa.

Mankind wastes money everyday on massive budgets and projects that will never be an aid to Mankind, might help a large group of people but never Mankind. The exploration of space and other planets will in no doubt eventually benefit mankind in some form or other. Lets face it if they never designed the rover and the 2.2 billion dollars was not spent, would it have gone to feeding Africa or fixing the middle east? no is the answer, the world would have never changed and we would also never have landed another rover on Mars.

Trouble is that those people are too stupid to realise how much science has been done in just landing the rover - we now know how to place heavy assets on another planet accurately and without breaking them, which is exactly what we will need to go there.
