Recommend Me A Coffee Maker

Can't stand the stuff myself, but Mrs Z loves it and she wants one for her birthday. Can anyone recommend a machine (preferably one that grinds the beans)? Spending £3/400 isn't an issue.

All the bean to cup options are a bit flaky even above that budget. I grind the buggers with a thus far indestructible electric grinder then use a regular press. Machine wise you may want to consider the same with a long term view in mind - if novelty value means more then go nuts.

Does she drink espresso or long cups?

Why not one of the pod ones? I'm sure theirs some coffee purists out there who may hate them but I got one not long ago and could never go back to a cafetiere/normal coffee machine (unless it was a hideously expensive one), may be my lack of ability to make a decent coffee but tastewise its about 14 times better.

Yeah was going to ask if pods were on the menu. If so they're far more reliable and you can buy the pods at quite good prices in bulk.

I know some might not agree, but I can recommend spending an extra £50 on the grinder to get a burr one. The quality of the grind really does effect the coffee taste if your putting it through a decent machine.

As for coffee maker, Make sure its a pump machine rather than pressure and spend over £250 and you can't go too far wrong.

Excellent coffee but you need to buy the pods online: http://www.nespresso.com/uk/en/wheel. They're effectively 30p no matter how many purchased. They also run a recycling system (pick up on delivery etc).

What's a pod? Is it one of those little sachet things with a plastic nozzle that you plug into the machine?

Design of them changes (below is where i order mine) but its generally just a plastic pod of some sort that holds an amount of coffee, machine pierces it and the pods are tough enough to take pressure and brew a decent cup of coffee/espresso. Basically drop in and make a decent cup coffee, i love it , coffee purists hate em in general. Depends on what your wife likes i guess!

The Senseo/Nespresso etc machines make lovely coffee. The grinding ones are great but sometimes there just isn't time to fart about tbh.

I was also going to mention pods. I'm a big coffee fan but couldn't justify £xxx on a bean-to-cup, and sometimes I just cba messing around with a press (especially for a single cup), so went for a Krups Dolce Gusto model that, thanks to a half-price deal for £50, does the job nicely. Good variety of coffee pods too.

Don't get a Senseo pod machine.

The coffee comes out at just the right temperature to drink it RIGHT NOW - wait a few mins and its cold.

I'd do what other peeps say - get good grinder, plunger job and you are done. Oh yeah, and if cappuccino is your thing, you don't need a machine - just a whisk.

Dunno about the senseo ones in specific but mines has a control for the temperature so you can make it warmer if you like, i do tend to chuck the milk+cup in the microwave for 30 seconds before making it though to prewarm it which also helps.

Forgetting the more complex stuff for the moment, these things are incredibly en vogue at the moment and do indeed product a uniquely splendid cup of coffee;

Check out the drippers and kettle alternatively - you could put together quite a unique set for special coffee occasions (i.e. Saturday and not every other day of the week when speed is of the essence.)

I love coffee, and usually use a cafetiere. I have a Senseo machine too, had it years.

My sister has a Nespresso and it makes delicious coffee tbh. They range from £80 to about £500.
