Scottish Catholic priests' letter condemns gay marriage

Cardinal O'Brien appears to be stepping up the Catholic Church's campaign against gay marriage

Roman Catholic priests are to read out a letter in each of the Church's parishes in Scotland criticising the Scottish Government for plans to introduce gay marriage.

Last week the leader of the Church in Scotland, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, broke off discussions about the issue with the First Minister, Alex Salmond.

The church has declared 26 August as National Marriage Sunday.

The Scottish Government says it is right to introduce same-sex marriage.

But it has stressed no clergy would be forced to carry them out.

BBC religious affairs correspondent Robert Pigott said Cardinal O'Brien showed last week he was ready to escalate the dispute about gay marriage.

Our correspondent says the letter to be read by priests in all 500 Roman Catholic parishes in Scotland is a further sign of the cardinal's willingness to recruit Catholics in a political campaign against it.

The letter criticises the Scottish Government for trying to change what Cardinal O'Brien considers to be the only legitimate definition of marriage - the lifelong union of a man and a woman.

'Grotesque subversion'
The letter also announces the launch of a National Commission for Marriage and the Family to co-ordinate a campaign against gay marriage.

Cardinal O'Brien - who in March described gay marriage as a "grotesque subversion of a universally accepted human right" - is showing that he is determined to do whatever it takes to prevent the legislation succeeding.

The Scottish government has pledged to bring forward a bill on the issue later this year, and has indicated the earliest ceremonies could take place by the start of 2015.

Same-sex couples in Scotland can already enter into civil partnerships, and the Scottish government has promised to protect religious freedoms and say any changes would not see churches forced to take part in same-sex ceremonies.

The UK government's consultation on allowing civil marriages for gay and lesbian couples closed in June.

The coalition is analysing the results before publishing its formal response but Prime Minster David Cameron has promised legislation before the next election.

Deliver Us from Evil (2006) is a documentary film directed by Amy J. Berg which tells the true story of Catholic priest Oliver O'Grady, who admitted to having sexually abused/molested and raped approximately twenty five children in Northern California between the late 1970s and early 1990s.

A defrocked Roman Catholic priest who admitted molesting more than 20 children in California has been sentenced to three years in prison in Ireland for possessing child pornography, court officials said Tuesday.

Oliver O'Grady, 66, was arrested in Dublin in December 2010 after leaving a computer containing pornographic images of children on a flight from Amsterdam.

O'Grady worked in northern California from 1971 until 1993, when he was arrested for abusing two brothers. He served seven years in prison and was deported to his native Ireland in 2000. He later moved to the Netherlands for several years.

O'Grady was the subject of the Academy Award-nominated 2006 documentary "Deliver Us From Evil." In the film he spoke openly of abusing more than 20 children as he was shuffled from one parish to another in California through the 1970s and 80s.

The Dutch Catholic Church came under fire in 2010 after it emerged that O'Grady had been working as a church volunteer in the city of Rotterdam. O'Grady had been living in the country under another name, but parishioners recognized him when "Deliver Us from Evil" was aired on Dutch television. By that time, the disgraced ex-cleric had already left the country.

O'Grady had pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child pornography. The Irish Courts Service said he was sentenced Monday at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The Roman Catholic diocese in Stockton, California, disclosed last year that it had agreed to pay $2 million to a brother and sister who alleged O'Grady molested them as children in the 1980s while they attended the Church of the Presentation and its school.

The Sacramento Bee newspaper reported last year that the diocese has now paid out almost $21 million to O'Grady's victims.

A cynic might say, having considered the Cardinal's stated positions on various subjects over the years-being more widely reported up here, for obvious reasons-that he's positioning himself clearly on the harder-core side of the Catholic Church, because, after all, the current Pope ain't going to last forever..

Only in Leviticus does it specifically say that homosexuality is an abonomation (afaik)

Yes but it also says that eating shellfish and wearing clothes made of 2 different materials is an abomination as well. Slavery is fine though. It even gives instructions on how much youre allowed to beat your slaves.
